Abstract
Do environmental conservation practices have an economic payoff?  Using a set of multi-year randomized control trials in Ethiopia, we investigate how tailored plot-specific information about soil conservation practices affects land productivity in the medium run. Results show that tailored information increased the likelihood of adoption of sustainable practices and this, in turn, improved land productivity for cereal producers. The findings suggest that plot-specific tailored information targeting cost-saving sustainable agricultural technologies substantially increases productivity for armers and enhances welfare. We further investigate if these positive effects are sensitive to climatic conditions. Policy implications are developed.
