DYNAMIC TEACHING STRUCTURED AROUND FOUR MAIN AXES

BUSINESS ENGLISH

  1. Knowledge and understanding: the course aims to develop the four linguistic skills (oral and written comprehension; oral and written expression) provided by the Common European Framework of Reference for Foreign Languages equivalent to level B2. Through various didactic approaches (traditional and multimedia), students - regardless of their previous cultural background of English language knowledge - will acquire adequate terminology and morphosyntactic structures appropriate to a qualified user such as a graduate in Economics.
  2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: teaching aims to put the students in the conditions of "knowing how to do", underpinned by the ideas of understanding and being able to express themselves in English. The students will enhance the knowledge acquired in their own language and will have the opportunity to acquire a specialistic language also in L2 (English).
  3. Making judgments: the course pushes its aims in a double direction, namely the practical use of oral and written English and the study of grammar aimed above all at the use of logical skills.
  4. Communication skills: in the telecommunication era, communication skills have been considered by the European Framework as a "fifth" competence (in addition to oral and written comprehension and oral and written expression). Knowing how to communicate includes the development of expressive ability since, without interaction, the simple issue of a message is unproductive. At the same time, the course aims to develop the learning skills the students in order to be autonomous in compliance with the Community action program in the field of lifelong learning (Lifelong Learning Program-LLP), established by the European Parliament and the Council in 2006. The overall objective is to contribute, through lifelong learning, to the development of the Community as an advanced knowledge-based society, with sustainable economic development, new and better jobs and greater social cohesion (Lisbon Strategy).

Business in movies

The use of original language audiovisual tools, with socioeconomic themes about globalization, allows the students to practice their linguistic competences and apply a transfer of good practice, which is indispensable for solid development within a “life-long” learning process. In addition, viewing film sequences offers the students an analytical approach to audiovisual techniques.

ABROAD EXPERIENCES – YORK

The English and management summer programme is a collaborative project established in 2013 between the Dipartimento di Economia e Impresa (University of Catania) and the centre for global programmes (university of York, U.K.). For three weeks in august our students live and study on campus at the University of York, where they learn to communicate with increased.
Confidence in spoken english, as well as in academic situations, and where they adopt a case-study approach to learning by preparing end-of-course project presentations. The english and management course gives them the opportunity to work alongside other students of economics and business from other countries, including Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China and Brazil. The case studies are linked to some of the trips that the students make during the course, and lessons are run by University of York english-teaching staff and lecturers from the York management school. In addition, there is a full timetable of social events on and off campus to enhance group bonding and team building between the nationalities, such as “ice-breaker”, karaoke, team treasure hunt, international cookery evening, conversation groups, but also group self-study sessions and conversation hours. Over 70 students have taken part in the programme so far, finding it not only invaluable in terms of their personal growth, but also as an addition to their academic portfolio, when applying either for post-graduate courses in Italy and other countries, or for jobs which require english language skills.
